Should you buy the iPhone 8? [September 2019]

iPhone 8

In 2017, Apple unveiled the iPhone that changed the way the iPhones had always worked – the home button was killed in favour of a gesture based on-screen navigation system. However, Apple knew that the change could be difficult for some of its customers and hence, the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus were released.

The iPhone 8 carried the same home-button styled design, it was basically an iPhone 7 with a glass back which enabled wireless charging. Under the hood, the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus were almost identical to the iPhone X (except the iPhone 8 had a single camera on the back).

The other major difference between the iPhone X and the iPhone 8 is in the authentication system. The iPhone 8 relies on the old TouchID based fingerprint recognition system whereas the iPhone X authenticates users using face recognition technology FaceID. Once you get used to FaceID, fingerprint authentication starts to seem like an age-old technology.

How does it fare in 2019?

The iPhone 8 is powered by the Apple A11 Bionic chip which is a beast even by today’s standards. The display is definitely not upto the mark when compared to iPhone X’s OLED panel which is much brighter. But if you have used an iPhone 6 or later, then you already know that displays on iPhones are absolutely fantastic.

The cameras on the iPhone 8 are generally pretty great. They may not be super champs as the latest cameras on the iPhone 11 and the iPhone 11 Pro with its three camera setup but when compared to budget Android phones, they are much better. Apple sells the iPhone 8 for $449 which seems like a lot for a two year old phone but if you can find it for less than $400 (USD) at third-party outlets or find it refurbished for less than $300, then it’s bang for your buck.
