MacBook Pro vs MacBook Air: Which one should you buy?

Apple last redesigned the MacBook Pro in 2016 by introducing a thinner profiled body. It removed all the ports in favour of just USB-C Thunderbolt 3.0 ports and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The MacBook Air was refreshed after a long gap in the month of September in 2018 – a treatment to that of the MacBook Pro.

The starting price of the MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro are so close that it could be a very difficult task to decide which one to buy. MacBooks cost more than a thousand dollars (USD) and getting the right product is very important. Laptops are devices that people use for a very long time compared to smartphones which are replaced every year or two.

Displays: Almost the same

The MacBook Pro (13 inch) and the MacBook Air offers a very similar content viewing experience. The MacBook Pro does offer TrueTone which adjusts the color temperature of the display according to the room’s lighting conditions and its display is also offers a wider P3 color gamut. Is it a big difference? It depends. If you are display purist, then the MacBook Pro makes sense, however for web browsing and other general tasks, the difference is not noticeable.

The other major difference between the MacBook Pro and the MacBook Air is in the processor. The MacBook Air uses Intel’s Y-series chip which is a low-power efficient processor whereas the MacBook Pro uses Intel’s U-series chip which is powerful processor comparatively. Also, the MacBook Pro offers a TouchBar whereas the MacBook Air sports a traditional functional keys along with the TouchID fingerprint reader. To be honest, the TouchBar is pretty useless in my opinion (some people may enjoy specific tasks).

So for basic usage, the MacBook Air is a better machine, as in the future TouchBar repairs could be expensive. But if you need more power, then get the MacBook Pro and sadly Apple stopped offering the non-TouchBar model.
