Mac Pro 2019: When will Apple release the “pro” machine?

Mac Pro

Apple unveiled a completely revamped Mac Pro at WWDC its flagship event for the year. The machine is scheduled to release in the fall, so we expect the company to hold an event to showcase the product once more and also release the highly rumoured new 16” MacBook Pro.

The 2019 Mac Pro goes back to the “cheese grater” design found on the Mac Pros prior to the 2013 version. In 2013, Apple released the “trash can” styled circular Mac Pro which was beefier in terms of performance at the time but lacked upgradability option due to its customized internals and also was not perfect at cooling.

The trash can is dead!

After which, Apple did not update the Mac Pro for a very long time leaving professionals like video editors in a lurch. The new version of the Mac Pro which is scheduled to hit the stores any time now, is much better in terms of “upgradability”. The machine is much easier to open and because of its sheer size of volume, its extremely good at cooling. So, no more thermal throttling.

The new Mac Pro starts at $5,999 for the base 8-core Intel Xeon W processor and it could reportedly go upto $45,000 for the most powerful configuration with a 28-core Intel Xeon W processor. The most insane option configuration is the top-end version with 1.5TB of DDR4  ECC memory. The machine has 12 user accessible DIMM slots offering the best user upgradability options of (probably) any computer.

Insane levels of raw power

Apple is also allowing users to use upto four GPUs using MPX modules. The default options being AMD Radeon Pro 580X, AMD Radeon Pro Vega II, and AMD Radeon Pro Vega II Duo. The most powerful option can support upto eight 4K displays at the same time or four 5K displays or four Pro Display XDRs.

We’ll update you as we hear more about the product.
