Apple has been steadily removing accessories that come with an iPhone purchase, but in other countries, the Cupertino-based company is required to add them in.
Just recently Apple was forced to comply with local Sao Paulo laws and add power adapters on every iPhone. Public consumer protection agency Procon-SP sent a notification to Apple to clarify why they didn’t include the charger, to which Apple replied that most users would already have a compatible adapter, and not having one in the box would reduce carbon emission.
Procon-SP however reiterates that the power adapter is an essential component for the product and selling iPhones without it is considered a violation of the Brazilian Consumer Defense Code. Furthermore, the organization states there isn’t enough evidence that the occlusion of the charger helps the environment, and that Apple won’t extend support to third party chargers.
Apple must respond to the case or be fined in Brazil. The National Consumer Secretary of the country is also considering having Apple add the adapter outside Sao Paulo.
