Apple to release four iPhone 12 models this year

Apple is scheduled to release four iPhone 12 models this year. Also, this year, the company is expected to release its flagship iPhones in the month of October as the coronavirus global pandemic has reportedly affected the original plans. It was reported that work from home was just not possible for the design team which has to be a studio with machines and also a lot of employees make regular trips to the manufacturing plant in China – all of which had come to halt.

According to the noted Apple leakster Jon Prosser, the company will launch four iPhones – expanding its lineup. Last year, Apple released three new iPhones in September. This year, there will be a new addition – a compact 5.4” iPhone 12.

The iPhone 12 lineup-

  • 5.4” iPhone 12
  • 6.1” iPhone 12
  • 6.1” iPhone 12 Pro
  • 6.7” iPhone 12 Pro

The major differentiating factors between the standard iPhone 12 models and the iPhone 12 Pro models will be – cameras, display, maybe chargers, and sensors.

The iPhone 12 models will reportedly have two cameras on the back – a regular wide shooter and an ultra-wide shooter whereas the iPhone 12 Pro models will have three cameras on the back – main wide camera, ultra-wide camera, and a telephoto sensor. Also, the iPhone 12 Pro models will reportedly have the LiDAR sensor from the iPad Pro.

LiDAR sensors are useful in improving the augmented reality (AR) experience. However, at present there are no apps or services that take full advantage of the technology. But the scenario could very well change in the future.

The other major difference (or maybe minor?) between the iPhone 12 models would be the display. According to Jon Prosser, Apple will reportedly use displays made by Samsung on the “Pro” models and use displays made by BOE (a Chinese company) in the standard iPhone 12 models.
