2019 has been a bad year for the iPhone. Well, not exactly for the iPhone as the iPhone 11 and the iPhone 11 Pro are one of the finest phones the company has made in a longtime. However, it’s the software that shipped with these devices that have been problematic.
iOS 13 has been termed as the most unstable software update in a longtime. It’s not just the software that runs on the iPhone but also the software that powers the iPad, iPadOS which has suffered badly from major bugs.
It’s the same case on the Mac side with macOS Catalina being the buggiest software update in a longtime. On the iOS side, Apple has been pushing multiple software updates in just the duration of a week. It has led to the netizens making quality memes trolling Apple for its terrible software quality testing.
To fix the issues, Apple is reportedly working on changing the way it tests software starting with iOS 14. Apple appears to moving to the more traditional approach of software testing which is used by the likes of companies like Microsoft and most big tech companies.
Renewed focus on reliability
Apple’s iOS 11 was also buggy but not as bad as iOS 13. Apple focused on reliability with iOS 12 to fix the issues iOS 11 introduced and to generally improve the system performance by improving the code. The company appears to be doing the same with iOS 14 by focussing on the performance aspects of the operating system and not on new nifty features.
However, the change appears to be much bigger as the company changes the way it test software. We could expect the same to happen with the testing of macOS and iPadOS. Maybe watchOS and tvOS as well.
