When will Apple update the iMac Pro?

Apple unveiled the iMac Pro at WWDC 2017, the company’s annual developer’s conference after having talked to a group of journalists about the state of Mac. The company was heavily criticized for having neglected the pro machines for a very long time and in 2017, the company told the press that it was planning to release a slew of new “Pro” machines.

First of the bunch was the iMac Pro only a few months later in June, after the meeting with journalists in April. John Ternus, Vice President (VP) of Mac and iPad hardware said, “iMac Pro combines the incredible design of the iMac with the most powerful workstation architecture we’ve ever built.”

When will Apple update the iMac Pro?

The iMac Pro featured the same design and the dimensions of a regular iMac. However, the insides of the machine were radically different compared to a standard iMac. The iMac Pro is powered by the workstation class chips made by Intel’s Xeon family of processors whereas the regular iMac features the i series chips.

The iMac Pro also does an extremely good job in terms of graphics performance. The machine uses Radeon Pro Vega graphics which allow users to run graphic intensive apps like Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, and more.

The only update the iMac Pro received since its release in 2017 has been the addition of Radeon Pro Vega 64X graphics upgrade option and support for upto 256GB RAM in March 2019. Also, the company reduced the price of its 64GB RAM and 128GB RAM options by $400 along with the 2TB and 4TB options seeing price reduction of $200.

The iMac pro starts at $4,999 and goes all the way up to over $15,000 – all configurations feature the same 27” display. Its unclear as to when Apple will update the iMac Pro as this December will mark the second birthday of the machine since its public release.
