Japan Display, one of Apple’s display partners is setting up facilities to begin production of OLED screens, but results may come after a couple of years.
After a crucial cash package from Suwa Investment worth $752 million, the company is poised to assume a major shareholder position, and Winston Lee, CEO of Suwa could become its director.
The Japan Times reports that the firm intends to revive itself by making OLED panels in Ishikawa Prefecture, more specifically at Japan Display’s Hakusan plant. Lee mentions that to build a production plant in China will mean 3 to 4 years of development, while having it in Hakusan can reduce the timeframe significantly.
In 2015, Apple helped JDI build an LCD factory, with the company having to pay the Cupertino-based firm over time. The shift from LCD to LED put Japan Display in danger of going out of business, but a timely help package allowed JDI to get back on track.
