Apple has announced that it will be awarding Corning, its glass supplier for Apple Watch, iPad and iPhone $250 million, adding to the $200 million that was given in 2017.
The $450 million total funding will be used for ‘state of the art’ glass materials, equipment and processes needed to deliver next-gen consumer devices, which include the iPhone 11 Pro and the iPhone 11.
The Advanced Manufacturing Fund program was created to support high skill jobs and innovative production that propel new technology-driven manufacturing in the US. Apple has invested $10M to Elysis and $390M to Finisar.
Apple has partnered with Corning since 2007 for its glass product used in Apple Watch and the iPhone. The iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone 11 Pro and the iPhone 11 use Corning glass manufactured in Harrodsburg, Kentucy. The company has provided glass for iPads, and all generations of Apple Watch and the iPhone. Apple has spent approximately $3 billion on Corning glass for use on its devices.
