At WWDC 2019, Apple released iOS 13 specifically for iPhones. The iPads from here on will be running on iPadOS, the company’s effort at releasing “iPad” specific features targeted at large screens. iOS 13 packs a lot (like a lot) of new features: some under-the-hood and some UI changes.

The biggest and the most requested feature for sometime has been “Dark Mode” in iOS and Apple has delivered on it. iOS 13 will ship with a system-wide dark theme for both “cool” looking reasons and as well as it going easy on the eyes. All the Apple-made system apps take advantage of the dark gradient to show-off a glass-shade black colour (when transparency is enabled).

Faster and slicker

According to Craig Federighi, VP of Software at Apple, iOS 13 has some really drastic changes under-the-hood i.e it will be very snappy. App launches in iOS 13 will supposedly be twice as fast and the general working of the operating system will be faster as well compared to the previous version of iOS 12. However, the real-world performance of iOS 13 is yet to be tested, the final version of the same doesn’t come out until September, so it’s very soon to comment.

Also, one of the most annoying thing on the iPhone for some years has been the big volume control box which pops-up in the middle of the screen and literally covers most of the content you’re watching. iOS 13 will do away with that, in favour of a more subtle small bar on the left side of the screen which after few milliseconds turns into a thin bar. It can also be interacted with, similar to the volume control found in the Control Center.

There are many other new features in iOS 13 which Apple didn’t show-off on the stage but could be checked out with the public beta. For example, iOS 13 will allow users to choose WiFi network right from the Control Center which is something I’ve been asking for a longtime.

iOS 13 will run on the iPhone 6S and iPhones released after that which also includes the iPhone SE. The public beta of iOS 13 is expected to release in the month of July, however if you’re a paid developer, you could get your hands-on the latest beta software.
