The Metropolitan Transportation Authority in New York has recently announced that Apple Pay will be a part of its tap-and-go payment system. Major hub Penn Station now supports Apple Pay and other contactless payments such as mobile wallets and cards from American Express, Mastercard and Visa.
New Yorkers and Apple Pay users can now tap and ride on 85 Apple Pay-ready stations this month, with contactless payment eventually expanding to all 472 subway stations and bus routes before 2021.
In March 2020, MTA buses in Manhattan will accept Apple Pay. Apple’s contactless payment system became available on buses in Staten Island and select subway stations in May via Express Transit mode. Commuters can simply place their Apple Watch or iPhone near the reader without having to enter a password, Touch ID or Face ID and without having to unlock the device.
The MTA says that their MetroCards will still be available for the next couple of years.
