Apple sells a lot of products but only the iPhone sells like hotcakes. The 2019 iPhone isn’t out yet and already reports pertaining to the 2020 iPhone appear to have leaked. According to the noted KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhones to be released in 2020 will use OLED displays and also adopt the next generation 5G wireless technology.

At present, the top-end iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max use LED displays whereas the cheaper model iPhone XR uses a less sharper LCD display. Nonetheless, the strategy will reportedly change from the following year with Apple using OLED panels on all of its iPhones.

Apple will reportedly also offer a smaller version of the iPhone with a 5.4” screen down from the present iPhone XS’ 5.8” display. Come fall of 2020, Apple is speculated to announce three iPhones with sizes 5.8 inch, 6.1 inch and 6.7 inch. iPhone 8 (and all 4.7” screen) users who have been unable to adjust with the large size of the iPhone XS will now have the option to go with the compact 5.4” model.

On the other hand, the 5G support will only be added to the premium 5.4” and 6.7” screen iPhones in 2020. The budget oriented 6.1” iPhone XR (2020) will reportedly continue to rely on 4G LTE network. Kuo also adds that, all iPhones releasing in 2022 or 2023 will offer 5G support as the network rolls out gradually worldwide.

Apple is also rumoured to use its own 5G modems starting 2022 or 2023 which would mean the company’s less reliance on Qualcomm and Samsung to supply the modems. The move could help the company ship products sooner and may also help cut costs while having majority of the components made in-house.
