Review: X-Doria Defense 720 / Scene Grip / Scene Plus for iPhone 6

Review: X-Doria Defense 720 / Scene Grip / Scene Plus for iPhone 6

Scene Grip ($25), Scene Plus ($30), and Defense 720 ($30) are among the first cases we’ve seen from X-Doria for iPhone 6. The company previously released versions of these cases for iPhone 5c. All of the cases offer coverage for the volume controls and Sleep/Wake button.

There isn’t much difference between these three cases, as they’re basically rubber bumpers with an attached plastic backing. Defense 720, however, has two pieces — in addition to back and side coverage, it has a full plastic front shield for the iPhone’s screen.

The side and back coverage is fine; the translucent back has an “x” pattern that differentiates it somewhat from the Scene cases. Unfortunately, as in the past version of the Defense 720 case, that extra front protection does somewhat diminish the screen’s vibrant display.

Both Scene Grip and Scene Plus are similar, but lack the front protection of Defense 720 — of course, they also give users a clearer display. Scene Plus offers a 3-D pattern on the back of its case to justify the $5 price jump from Scene Grip. Like Defense 720, Scene Plus also has a diamond pattern on the sides for added grip, while the design-focused Scene Plus has smooth sides.

Port cutouts on the bottoms of the cases all match and fit the iPhone 6 very well.

While the cases are similar, we think the Scene Grip makes the most sense for most consumers. It’s not flashy, but it provides adequate coverage at a good price. Consumers who want the design on the back probably won’t mind paying the extra $5 for Scene Plus, but it doesn’t really add anything else to justify the premium. Defense 720 is close to a Scene Grip with screen protection, though it doesn’t fit as well without the front protector in place.
