Review: Urban Armor Gear Composite Case for iPhone 5c

Review: Urban Armor Gear Composite Case for iPhone 5c

Offered in clear and black, white and black, or all-black versions, Urban Armor Gear’s Composite Case for iPhone 5c ($35) is a rugged-looking plastic case that’s highly similar to the iPhone 5/5s version, but now with the clear option to show off whatever your iPhone 5c’s color may be. We found the previous edition of the case to be worthy of a strong general recommendation, thanks to its overall protective nature and unique look. Thankfully, UAG maintained most of the design elements on this one, and kept the same price.

All three colors of Composite Case are made up of a combination of plastic and rubber, with the latter material around the sides, and making up the top and bottom edges.

On the black and white/black versions, it extends to the back of the case as well, adding a degree of shock protection. The clear edition is missing that material though, and instead has sections of honeycomb patterns in its place; it’s necessary for transparency. Each has faux rivets that contribute to the industrial look, and screen film for added coverage.

We tend to be sticklers for button protection, finding value in cases that provide coverage without affecting how clicking feels. Composite Case got the design right, with Sleep/Wake and volume button protectors that can easily be found by touch and don’t hinder tactility in any way.

In fact, the Sleep/Wake button is even clickier inside the case than without it. Port openings on the bottom edge are quite large, so accessory compatibility isn’t an issue.

Once again, Urban Armor Gear has produced a very good iPhone case that’s worthy of consideration, but it’s not for everyone. The level of protection is just about where we expect, and the screen film only helps.
