Folios have become the most common style of iPad case over the past two years, and depending on what you’re looking for, one of the dozens of new designs might be an ideal fit for your tablet. A folio places your iPad inside of a fabric, leather, or plastic enclosure that looks like a folder, generally opening to reveal a holder for the iPad on one side, and screen-covering lid with a stand or stand support on the other.
Today, we’re separately rounding up three different categories of folios for the third-generation iPad — updates to past iPad 2 models we’ve covered, “new” options that are highly similar to ones we’ve covered before, and then truly new models that are distinctive in at least a couple of ways. This review is part of the “new but highly similar” case roundup, looking at Uniq Creation’s Streak ($59).
Streak is the kind of case we’ve come to expect from Uniq Creation: made for the third-generation iPad, it’s an OEM-produced thin folio in the style of Apple’s original iPad Case, complete with a cover-and-tab stand system that otherwise wouldn’t garner too much attention, updated solely in materials and to fit the new iPad’s different curves.
It stands out from the pack thanks to the legitimately cool design: available in a variety of colors, each Streak has a series of colored horizontal columns that catch the eye, especially when compared to most of the single-colored cases out there; there’s also a slogan specific to this model hidden behind the iPad inside. Additionally, it’s worth noting that embedded magnets hold the cover shut, and do successfully wake and sleep the iPad’s display; unlike some cases, they don’t jiggle around and accidentally unlock the screen.
The rub with Streak is that the price feels somewhat too high for the design—derivative of the iPad Case and slightly plasticy-feeling on the outside, the case is nice enough to actually recommend using, but doesn’t feel deluxe enough to merit a premium.
