Review: Trident Case Aegis, Cyclops, Kraken A.M.S. + Perseus for iPhone 6

Review: Trident Case Aegis, Cyclops, Kraken A.M.S. + Perseus for iPhone 6

Trident Case has released a variety of cases for iPhone 6, including Aegis ($35), Cyclops ($40), Kraken A.M.S. ($50), and Perseus ($20). The differences in pricing reflect a range of sophistication: Perseus is a simple one-piece gel case, while Aegis is a dual-layer rubber and plastic case. Continuing on, Cyclops adds a front layer of protection, while Kraken A.M.S is the company’s heavy-duty case; it includes a built-in kickstand and comes with a belt clip holster, as well.

Aegis, like a lot of rubber and plastic iPhone 6 cases we’ve seen so far, may spook users when inserting the iPhone for a correct fit. This is even a bit more troublesome than most in that regard, however.

The case’s rubber layer comes extremely close to the iPhone 6’s proximity sensor above the ear microphone, which could be an issue. Button coverage is nice and clicky, and the case offers sealed port protection, even offering part-time coverage for the ringer switch — a panel that you need to flip open to access, which may or may not be welcome. There’s also a fully exposed cutout for the rear Apple logo, which we really don’t like. A piece of screen film is included.

Cyclops is a bit more protective than Aegis, adding a front layer that clicks into place on top of the co-molded back shell. It looked solid at the start, but simply removing the front layer from the phone caused that layer to bend.

If you’re not careful, you could crack the plastic there, which feels flimsy. We liked the look of the case, but couldn’t trust the design.

Unfortunately, a crack is what happened with Kraken A.M.S. during our testing, though not in the front layer. Trident’s seemingly most protective iPhone 6 case cracked when simply pulling the phone out of the case for the first time. It wasn’t a large crack, but it’s certainly enough to consider the case defective.
