We knew The Joy Factory’s new aXtion Bold for iPad Air ($60) looked familiar when it arrived in our office, and upon closer inspection it became clear. Whether it’s manufactured by the folks behind Hard Candy Cases’ ShockDrop and Gumdrop Cases’ Drop Tech Series, or simply produced in the same factory, the plastic and rubber case uses the exact same inner frame, with a slightly different outer rubber skin.
Instead of tire treads, this one has a slight texture, with a large, raised, smooth X across it.

aXtion Bold earns a general recommendation, slightly lower than ShockDrop because of the $10 higher price.
