Combining the company’s earlier SeeThru-series cases with its latest CandyShell for iPad, Speck’s new SeeThru and SeeThru Satin for iPad ($50 each) are hard plastic and rubber hybrid designs that provide substantial coverage for the iPad’s body. SeeThru is a completely clear frame with slightly frosted rubber used as edging, holding the iPad inside and enabling it to sit flat on any surface, while SeeThru Satin is supposed to be translucent with a matte soft touch rubber finish completely coating its body.
The standard SeeThru looks really sharp — one of the nicest and most protective clear shells we’ve yet seen for the iPad — while SeeThru Satin varies from color to color. Speck’s “black” version is so dark as to be almost opaque, looking faintly purple when nothing’s inside, and a similarly slight fudge brown with an iPad inside.
Purple and royal blue colored versions we received in late July, 2010 were comparatively bright in tone. Both cases have integrated button protection, and flip-open Dock Connector covers that enable them to be used with Apple’s iPad Dock and iPad Keyboard Dock, if less conveniently with everything else because they constantly need to be folded open and closed.
