Review: Speck CandyShell Wrap for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus

Review: Speck CandyShell Wrap for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus

Speck has brought its CandyShell Wrap case to iPhone 6 ($50) and iPhone 6 Plus ($60). Last seen back in 2011 for the iPad 2, CandyShell Wrap is a co-molded iPhone case similar to the other CandyShell options, with one obvious standout feature — a front cover for the iPhone. The cover is not removable — it’s attached to the case, and can be folded back behind the case when using the phone, but it’s not like a traditional folio case.

Volume controls and the sleep/wake button are both covered.

CandyShell Wrap is a very protective case. It offers proper and responsive button coverage, it’s well-made, and of course, it adds front screen coverage. The front cover rests on top of the iPhone, but it can also be pressed down into a “locked” position.

While we found no calling issues with the front cover on, using the iPhone’s screen is more of a hassle — the front flap automatically returns to a position that covers the screen, so it must be held behind the phone (or to the side) when using apps, watching video, and so forth.

CandyShell Wrap’s attached front flap causes at least as many problems as it intends to solve. The case offers nearly complete device protection for an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus, but it also creates an obstacle to using the phone’s display. And unlike most folio cases we cover, there’s no space for credit cards or cash — the front flap is to be used as a cover only.
