Review: Speck CandyShell Card for iPhone 5

Review: Speck CandyShell Card for iPhone 5

Although it didn’t launch alongside Speck’s original batch of iPhone 5 cases, CandyShell Card ($40) has returned to the company’s lineup. First made available for the iPhone 4/4S, the case combines elements of the standard CandyShell with those of the subsequently-released SmartFlex Card. The result is a co-molded rubber and glossy plastic shell with room for up to three credit cards in the back; it’s an amalgamation of features from a pair of great cases.

At its core, CandyShell Card is almost identical to a standard CandyShell, except it’s a bit thicker due to the card holder.

It uses the same rubber inside, plastic outside design, including extending the rubber out to the corners, buttons, and front edge. The bottom is the same too, with full openings for the headphone and Lightning ports, and small dots exposing the speaker and microphone. As we’d expect, button coverage is executed just how it should be, with full protection, but without dampening button sensitivity. This design continues to offer one of the best tradeoffs of size and drop protection we’ve seen.

Along the case’s rear left edge is a 3.5” long slot cut into the plastic.

Underneath, it’s lined with rubber, and although you can’t see it while the case is installed, there’s a bump that prevents your cards from sliding around, even if there’s just one. Thankfully, this works; even with extreme shaking, a single card will stay securely in place. Despite this impressive grip, card removal is easy. You can simply push your card or cards out, using the thumb hole on the right side of the case.

The only reason that CandyShell Card earns a B+, and not the same high recommendation as SmartFlex Card, is its slightly higher price.
