Rokform’s new Rokfolio Wallet Case ($46-$56) for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus offers a number of features usually found in separate cases. Not only is it a folio wallet case which can hold up to three credit cards, but Rokfolio also features a built-in magnet and comes with a magnetic mount, as well, to mount the case on various surfaces. The case is also compatible with Rokform’s v3 mounting accessories using the hole in the back of the case. Volume controls and the sleep/wake button are both covered.
When looked at as a case, Rokfolio offers admirable protection. It’s a bit thick, and if you’re not going to use any other of Rokform’s v3 accessories, the hole in the back will ultimately be pointless.
But large port openings should make it easy to use third-party accessories. Overall, as a folio case, it’s fine, especially considering the three card slots, which each easily hold one card without issue.
The mounting capabilities offer as many questions as answers. We found the easy stick magnetic mount to be strong — we mounted it to a variety of surfaces and it held just fine (the iPhone 6 Plus comes with a slightly larger mount to hold the larger device). The case can be mounted with the folio flap open or closed. But if you’re using the case with credit cards in it, you’re not going to want to put the strong magnetic mount directly on those cards.
So, you’re left with a nearby dangling flap while trying to look at your mounted phone. It’s not an ideal situation.
Rokfolio is best described as a “jack of all trades, master of none.” It works OK as a wallet case, but it’s also a bit bulky, due to the built-in magnet. That magnet works with the mount to make a reasonable mounting system, but mounting a folio case isn’t the best-case scenario, either. Then there’s the relatively high price, especially for the iPhone 6 Plus version of the case, which is $10 more than the iPhone 6 edition. Most users would be better served to buy either a folio case or a case that works with another mount.
Rokfolio isn’t bad — it just tries to do too much.
