Review: OtterBox Symmetry Series Hybrid Case for 12.9” iPad Pro

Review: OtterBox Symmetry Series Hybrid Case for 12.9” iPad Pro

OtterBox’s new Symmetry Series Hybrid Case ($130) for the 12.9″ iPad Pro ticks off almost all of the boxes one would want in an iPad Pro case. Symmetry pairs a clear hard plastic-and-rubber rear case with a detachable folio cover. When the folio is removed, the left side of the iPad opens up, allowing Smart Connector keyboards and accessories to be accessible. Volume button coverage is present and adequately responsive.

OtterBox even included a small fabric loop to keep the Apple Pencil secured to the tablet when not in use. The only obvious immediate downside of the case is its price. At $130, Symmetry Series Hybrid Case is by far the most expensive non-keyboard iPad Pro case we’ve reviewed as of this writing.

As you’d expect from an OtterBox case, Symmetry is no slouch when it comes to protection. The plastic-and-hard rubber frame protects against drops, and the folio cover offers complete coverage of an iPad Pro.

We really like detachable folio options on iPad cases, and it’s even more helpful when the detached cover allows access to the Smart Connector. The cover does indeed activate the iPad’s sleep/wake function, and it also works as a multi-angle viewing stand. Symmetry’s simple fabric loop for Apple Pencil is another big bonus — we wish more casemakers would consider the Pencil when developing iPad Pro cases.

OtterBox carefully considered the features and dynamics of the biggest iPad when designing this case, and for that, the company deserves to be commended. This isn’t just a rehashed iPad case — it’s truly an iPad Pro case.
