Review: Olloclip 4-in-1 Photo Lens for iPhone 6 + iPhone 6 Plus

Review: Olloclip 4-in-1 Photo Lens for iPhone 6 + iPhone 6 Plus

Olloclip’s 4-in-1 Photo Lens for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus ($80) is the most recent version of the company’s 4-in-1 lens, which we’ve seen for other iOS devices. The lens attachment can be used on either the iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus — special clips are used to fit either phone. While the lens system fits both cameras on a bare iPhone 6 perfectly, it takes a slight manual adjustment to line up the kit with the iPhone 6 Plus cameras. Included lenses are wide-angle and fisheye, which can be unscrewed to reveal macro 10x and macro 15x lenses, respectively. Three pendants — green, blue, and black — are also included in the package.

The wearable pendants can hold the lens system when not in use. We’ve reviewed various versions of this product numerous times in the past, so we’ll keep this review shorter than usual.

Unlike past versions of Olloclip’s 4-in-1 Photo Lens, this edition is designed for two separate devices. Olloclip makes up for the difference in size between the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus by using two small clips that must be swapped out of the middle of the lens kit to fit the respective devices. The fit on the iPhone 6 is perfect, aligning nicely with both the rear iSight and FaceTime cameras. But on the iPhone 6 Plus, users must nudge the lens kit slightly to the left or right to match up with the camera of choice, as the kit just isn’t wide enough.

The clips are a bit awkward to insert, but once you’ve got the correct clip in place for your respective phone, there likely won’t be a need to remove it. The inclusion of the three colored pendants to hold the lens kit when not in use isn’t a bad idea — but if that’s a justification for the $10 price increase, it’s a questionable decision by Olloclip.

The lenses all still work as well as advertised, with the wide-angle and fisheye lenses screwing on over top of the macro 10x and macro 15x lenses. A wide-angle shot reveals more of the edges of a photo, while a fisheye lens photo will give users that now-classic bulbous look. We’ve demonstrated the difference between macro lenses in the next photo below — from left to right, an iPhone 6 Plus camera is used without a lens, then with the 10x macro lens, then the 15x macro lens. You’ve got to get in pretty close with your iPhone, but you can see how the macro lenses offer more detail —  note the bit of chocolate frosting stuck to a coconut shard.

Despite a few odd quirks this time around, we still think Olloclip’s newest 4-in-1 Photo Lens is a good product for users who have a special interest in iPhone photography.
