Review: Marware Azteka for iPhone 5/5s/5c

Review: Marware Azteka for iPhone 5/5s/5c

Although the shapes of the iPhone 5/5s and 5c are similar enough that cases for one or the other sometimes can fit the opposite handset, Marware’s Azteka ($15) is the first to be listed as supporting both. The textured silicone rubber case is molded into a pattern designed to mimic ancient ruins, which adds bulk but also a unique look. It comes in seven colors, and offers button protection, plus the proper openings along the bottom for either phone.

It’s definitely not for everybody, but the case’s design is certainly eye-catching. The pattern and texture really set it apart from virtually everything else available for iPhones right now.

Unlike some rubber cases, Azteka doesn’t get stuck when it’s pulled out of a pocket, and the fit is tight enough that it won’t pull away from the iPhone, either.

Of the handsets supported by Azteka, the iPhone 5c fits best. While the 5 and 5s absolutely do fit, they don’t fill the case as completely. You can feel this in the buttons, as the rubber has to travel down further, especially to hit the Sleep/Wake Button.

The 5c sits flush against the rubber, and pressing the buttons remains pleasantly clicky. The bottom edge of the case exposes the ports on both phones, although it also seems designed more for the 5c, as the speaker and microphone on the 5/5s are partially covered.

If you like the way it looks and are willing to deal with some extra bulk, Azteka is a good case, particularly for the iPhone 5c. At only $15, it’s an even more interesting option. The fit isn’t quite as good for the 5/5s, though; it seems Marware is focusing more on the idea that it can fit, rather than whether the case works just as well.
