Review: Magpul Bump Case for iPhone 5/5s

Review: Magpul Bump Case for iPhone 5/5s

When Magpul first shipped us its Executive Field Case for iPhone 4, we were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the injection molded case, the first cell phone accessory from a manufacturer that normally focuses on accessories for firearms. Now, almost three years later, we’ve seen multiple protectors from at the company, all sharing the same general design, all affordable, and all ranging from very good to great in quality. The latest is Bump Case for iPhone 5/5s ($27), Magpul’s most advanced case yet, and as we’ve come to expect, it comes in many colors.

Bump Case is the first of the company’s products to feature a multi-layer design.

While it looks like the semirigid protectors that’ve come before, this one is actually a hard outer shell with a soft, shock-absorbing interior, making it more like the dual-molded cases we often favor. Inside, it looks similar to the texture found inside Speck’s CandyShells. Instead of a flat layer of material, there are depressed dashes, which create small air pockets. The rubber layer also extends out to the edges, where it serves as a suitable protective lip around the display, forms the array of openings for the ports on the bottom that works with most plugs, and covers the buttons.

A ridged texture helps make it easy to find those buttons, and they click without any resistance.

The most visible portion of the case is the hard plastic exterior, which looks almost identical to Field Case, but is much harder material. It has the same intersecting line pattern and Magpul logo toward the top. The one obvious visual difference is a collection of raised bumps in three of the four corners.
