Review: Kerf Case Wood Cases for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus

Review: Kerf Case Wood Cases for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus

We normally don’t review any shell-style cases — usually simple, cheap plastic cases that provide no button coverage and offer virtually no protection — but we’ve made an exception for Kerf Case’s Wood Cases ($69-$149) for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Handsome cases that come in a number of materials for either of Apple’s newer iPhones, Kerf Cases give users the opportunity to get an attractive wooden case at a lower price than some competitors, while sacrificing protection. We received cork ($69) and spalted maple cases ($99) for iPhone 6, and a black walnut case ($99) for iPhone 6 Plus — other than the cork, different cases might cost more or less than what we’ve reviewed based on the wood used.

As alluded to earlier, Kerf Case’s wooden cases are similar to most shell cases, in that they offer no button coverage or port protection, leaving much of the iPhone exposed.

For what it’s worth, these cases do have a slight lip for screen protection, though that will likely be offset by the other gaps in the case. The fit is nice, however, as Kerf Case uses a thin cork lining to secure an iPhone; it’s also easy to pull an iPhone in and out of the case.

Kerf Case claims to be the only company currently making “high end all wood” cases in the United States, and wood for the cases is sourced locally and sustainably from forests around the company’s location in Pittsburgh. Again, if you’re looking for something inexpensive and protective, you probably won’t be searching for these hardwood cases in the first place.

But for those who want to sacrifice protection for style, Kerf Case has some of the most attractive iPhone cases we’ve seen. These cases will be limited to a certain type of consumer — perhaps for certain occasions, rather than as an everyday case, given the limited protection offered here. As such, Kerf Case’s wooden cases for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus earn our limited recommendation.
