As usually happens when new Apple products are released, some of the earliest cases are merely modest updates to prior options. The iPad Air is no exception, with Kensington’s Comercio Soft Folio Case & Stand ($40) as one of the first cases on the market. It’s very similar to soft folios we’ve seen in the past, although its style is completely different than that of Comercio Hard Folio, which launched at the same time. This means it’s not the most protective case around, and bulkier than absolutely necessary, but not huge.
Seven colors are available.
Instead of snapping the iPad Air into a hard shell, Comercio Soft uses a more flexible frame, with the tablet fitting through the right edge before being secured in place by a tuck-in flap. Most of the bezel is covered, and the same can be said for the edges, but not the corners. All four are exposed, as are the buttons, microphones, speakers, and Lightning port.
It’s a style that frankly feels dated, as so many more thoughtful designs have been developed over the past few years.
Inside the front lid, there are three credit card slots, plus a pocket for notes, and an elastic stylus or pen holder, all nice touches for those who may use iPad Airs in business or school settings. When closed, magnets hold the case shut, but they don’t lock or unlock the tablet, a disappointing omission we noted previously with Comercio Hard Folio. Rear stand positions come from tucking the lid into the back of the case, and then positioning it at a viewing or typing angle.
