Among Kensington’s first batch of iPad Air cases is Comercio Hard Folio Case & Adjustable Stand ($40). Although it shares a family name with a soft version, the two cases are actually quite different. This one is very much like the numerous hard-shell folios that have commonly accompanied iPad launches for the past few years, although built with nicer materials than are commonly found in the category.
Snapping the iPad Air into the rear hard plastic shell, it appears the case is just a bit larger than it’s supposed to be.
This doesn’t end up being a problem, as the molded polycarbonate still holds the tablet securely, but we noticed a bit of wiggle room. Lining the inside of the case and continuing over to the back of the lid is a very soft suede-like material that’ll help prevent scratches. Button and port protection are absent, though.
The plastic material that makes up the front of the lid and extends onto the back of the case comes in black, denim blue, red, and slate grey; it almost feels like fabric, and certainly doesn’t feel cheap. One of the cooler and more unique elements of the case is a clear plastic window on the back, designed to hold a business card for identification purposes.
Like most folios, Comercio folds into a stand for typing and viewing. There’s a single fixed typing angle, while a pair of rubber rails inside the lid allow for a range of video positions. Missing, however, are auto-locking magnets, which seems like a strange omission considering the feature has been standard in iPads since 2011.
A nice slim folio, Comercio doesn’t necessarily wow us, but it’s still a good option for those considering such a style.
