Billed as a “display and carry case,” Griffin’s new Standle for iPad ($50) immediately raised the excitement meter when we first saw photos this week, though the reality of the product is a little more complex. The glossy black hard plastic case is a two-piece design with a snap-on front bezel and back shell, turning the iPad into a boxy handle-equipped, carry-it-anywhere screen with twin video stands.
One pops out to hold the iPad in portrait mode, while the gray soft plastic handle does double duty as the other for video viewing or keyboard use. We were a little surprised that the gray plastic on the other side of Standle’s back was ready to peel off when we went to see if it, too, folded out, and that the front bezel was both a little less protective than the official product photography, as well as a little difficult to fully lock in place with the rear shell.
These little issues aside, though, it’s a winner: convenient for multiple purposes, and unlike anything else we’ve seen for the iPad to date.
