Review: Griffin Identity, Reveal cases for iPhone 6 + iPhone 6 Plus

Review: Griffin Identity, Reveal cases for iPhone 6 + iPhone 6 Plus

Griffin’s Identity ($30-$40) is a two-piece case for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, differing in price based on colors and textures. Each phone model’s base Identity case is $30, with a graphite-styled back version at $35, and a $40 premium called Identity Performance that also protects the front of the phone. Griffin claims that each slim Identity case can protect against 4-foot drops, while its simpler Reveal ($20) case for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus can guard against 3-foot drops. Reveal is essentially a one-layer transparent plastic shell with a rubber bumper around the edges.

The standard Identity cases provide back and side protection, including coverage of the iPhone’s volume controls and sleep/wake button.

A plastic backing snaps onto a rubber frame. We tested two different designs — the iPhone 6 case has a textured back, while the 6 Plus case has a clear back. Outside of this difference, the cases are the same. Griffin is advertising Identity as “ultra-slim,” but in person, the case is no thinner than Reveal.

Reveal is a simpler, one-piece case.

The holes on the bottom of Reveal are specifically cut for each port, and like Identity, each speaker hole on the phone gets its own hole in the case, a level of detail that we haven’t seen in many iPhone cases thus far. Featuring the same design and structure for both iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, Reveal is a minimalist case that lets users show off their iPhones with the transparent backing.

Griffin’s Identity is a solid case, giving users the ability to switch back patterns for more looks. It provides adequate protection at a decent price. But we don’t see why many people wouldn’t just buy Reveal instead — the drop protection in Reveal nearly matches Identity, and it’s a better deal at $20 for either the iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus.
