Review: Apple iPhone 6 + iPhone 6 Plus Leather and Silicone Cases

Review: Apple iPhone 6 + iPhone 6 Plus Leather and Silicone Cases

Apple’s own case options for the company’s new iPhones — the iPhone 6 Leather Case ($45), iPhone 6 Plus Leather Case ($49), iPhone 6 Silicone Case ($35), and iPhone 6 Plus Silicone Case ($39) — began to show up before the phones actually hit the market. All of the cases are wraparound shells that have been molded in the exact same way, differing only in materials, prices, and sizes. Each case offers button coverage for the volume controls and Sleep/Wake button, with a completely open bottom and front.

Basically a real leather shell, the Leather Case is similar to Apple’s prior-generation leather iPhone 5s Case, only at a higher price, while leaving the bottom of each phone completely exposed.

Microfiber on the inside keeps your device from getting scratched during insertion and removal. Five color options include Olive Brown, Black, Midnight Blue, Soft Pink, and (PRODUCT) RED exteriors. Each case is thin enough not to radically change the size of either iPhone, enabling the device to slip into and out of pockets.

The Silicone Cases are slightly less expensive versions of its Leather Cases, available in a wider and generally brighter array of six colors, but otherwise featuring the exact same design.

On the outside is a thin layer of silicone rubber, while the inside has an embossed microfiber lining; like the Leather Cases, the rear camera is ringed by a thin layer of black plastic regardless of the silicone color you choose.

While the lack of bottom protection on the cases might be an issue for some people, it’s also beneficial for connecting Lightning accessories, which were previously all but completely incompatible with Apple’s official iPhone case. The fit is as nice as you would expect from official Apple cases—sleek and minimalist. Though the anti-drop protection is minimal, and you don’t get as much body coverage as in rival dual-layer cases, these are attractive options that let both new iPhones retain their thin profiles.
