Reviews: Andantech.com’s In-Depth iPod Review

Although the bulk of most iPod reviews were filled with words of praise, almost every article included at least one sentence that pointed out what many felt was a fatal flaw in the iPod design: it would only work with a Macintosh computer.

Software: iPod Software Updater 1.0.4 Released

iPod Software 1.0.4 Updater adds support for iPod names of up to 255 characters, additional languages including Brazilian/Portuguese, Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, and Swedish, and addresses compatibility and performance issues which users may have experienced with version 1.0.3.

iLounger, “markalan” had some additonal comments on the new version:

“It fixes the lag experienced in the 1.0.3 updater, but I hear (not myself,
but from other podders) that the infamous whine is back.”

Tips & Tricks: iPod in the Mustang

iLounger, Bobby S. writes us with a tip on customizing your car’s center console to accomodate an iPod.

Looks like his iPod has a comfortable spot in his Mustang.

“Using basic craft foam I purchased in an art store, I was able to construct a secure holder for my iPod in my car’s old audio tape holder. I started with a large sheet as the bottom, cut to the shape of the cassette holder, and from there layered up with shapes to hold the iPod securely in place. The layers were all held together with basic craft glue.”

Editorial: Digital Devices

Bernell Dorrough writes:

Some Apple enthusiasts have made claims that the iPod should only work on Macs, making justifications ranging from that only Apple users deserve such great devices to that adding compatibility is not worth Apple’s time. But Windows compatibility for the iPod and future devices should not be overlooked, as it offers the potential for substantially increasing Apple’s total sales and market share, not only now but in the future.

Attention: New Flat-panel iMac for your iPod!
[Updated: Monday, January 7, 2002 9:59 AM PST]

See the flat-panel iMac with an iPod at MacGeneration.com.

View scanned photo now…

iLounger, Jeremy reports Apple.com is updating the front page. Within the alt tag of the new flat-panel iMac photo it reads:

15-inch Active Matrix LCD, 800-MHz G4 with Velocity Engine, SuperDrive (CD-RW/DVD-RW), GeForce2 MX Graphics, USB – FireWire – Ethernet, Apple Pro Speakers, AirPort ready, iPhoto, iTunes, iMovie, iDVD

We suspect this to be the high-end model.

Also mentioned in other alt tags is the Times article, a new 14” iBook, and new apps for Mac OS X.

The Time Canada website have corrected themselves and pulled the Apple article.
