iPhone Software 2.1 beta 4 has been released to select iPhone developers, surprisingly stripped of the push notification service support seen in earlier beta releases of 2.1.
According to Apple, the feature — designed to let applications such as instant messaging services continue to provide updates even when not active — has been pulled “for further development.” Apple has previously said the feature would be ready by September; it is unclear whether its removal is indicative of a delay.
