After releasing Miitomo in the Japanese App Store earlier this month, Nintendo announced it is bringing its first iOS app to the U.S. and several other countries starting Thursday. The free-to-play app revolves around creating custom Mii characters and sharing responses to questions like, “What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten?” and “If you were given ten grand to spend in one day, what would you do?” Answers are shared among friends, who can give responses a “heart” and reply with a picture or written comment.
Users can pre-register to be alerted when Miitomo is ready to be downloaded.
Those creating an account with Nintendo before the app launches will receive Platinum Points for the new My Nintendo rewards program, which is launching simultaneously with Miitomo. Platinum Points earned by interacting with Nintendo apps and services can be redeemed for rewards like games, download content, in-app items and eShop discount coupons. Users can also earn Gold Points by buying digital versions of games from Nintendo.com or Nintendo eShop on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS.
Miitomo is Nintendo’s first entry into the smartphone game market — though we hesitate to call it a game. The company is also working on an iOS addition to the popular Pokémon franchise to be released some time this year.
