An updated iPhone SE may in fact be coming as early as next month, according to a new report by Mac Otakara [via MacRumors]. Speaking with case makers at the Global Sources Mobile Electronics trade show in Hong Kong this week, the Japanese website was told that a second-generation iPhone SE would still maintain the same physical size as the current iPhone, but could eliminate the 3.5mm headphone jack and possibly even move to a glass back with wireless charging capabilities, although case makers seem less certain on that last point.
The new iPhone SE is also expected to be powered by Apple’s A10 Fusion chip — the same chip introduced in 2016 with the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus — which would provide a 40 percent performance boost and enable support fro the HEIF and HEVC image and video formats.
This latest information adds weight to a report from earlier this week that discovered regulatory filings noting new iPhone models expected to arrive within the next month or so. While there have been a variety of rumours of an updated iPhone SE over the past year, more recent reliable reports have indicated that Apple probably doesn’t have the bandwidth for a major refresh of the smaller iPhone model, and it’s therefore likely to see mostly a performance bump and other relatively minor improvements.
