Australia’s three largest banks have lodged an application with anti-trust regulators, requesting approval to negotiate with Apple on installing their own electronic payment apps on iPhones, Reuters reports. Apple currently doesn’t allow third-party payment apps to be loaded onto the iPhone, ostensibly because they would compete with its own Apple Pay system.
Australian banks have notoriously resisted signing deals to use Apple Pay and want iPhone users to be able to use the electronic wallet applications that they’ve already privately financed and developed. Both Apple and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission declined to comment on the application.
