Apple introduces new AppleCare+ theft and loss coverage in the U.S.

With yesterday’s launch of the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR, Apple has also quietly added a new AppleCare+ plan tier for U.S. customers, adding covering for not only accidental damage, but also theft and loss.

Apple introduces new AppleCare+ theft and loss coverage in the U.S.

The new plan, AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss, provides the same accidental damage coverage as the standard AppleCare+ plan, while also adding coverage for theft or loss of the iPhone, subject to a standard deductible according to the model. Under the new plan, users are still only covered for two incidents in total of either accidental damage, or theft, or loss, and Apple notes that theft and loss coverage requires the user to have Find My iPhone enabled on the device at the time that it was lost of stolen.

The deductibles for accidental damage remain the same under the new plan — $29 for screen damage or $99 any other accidental damage — regardless of iPhone model, however the new loss and theft deductibles range from $199 for iPhone 6 through iPhone 8 models, $229 for the iPhone 6 Plus through iPhone 8 Plus and new iPhone XR, or $269 for the OLED-screened iPhone X, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max. The new plan will be available for purchase when pre-ordering the new iPhones tomorrow, although it’s also particularly noteworthy that Apple appears to still be providing AppleCare+ coverage for the 2014 iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus models.
