Abode debuts Iota security camera system with support for HomeKit

Abode’s new Iota security device combines an HD security camera with a built-in gateway capable of connecting to multiple other smarthome security devices, allowing for a pretty robust set of home monitoring options. The Iota is HomeKit-compatible so it can be integrated into an existing configuration, but the Abode app also includes native app support for Nest and Ecobee devices along with local, direct integration with Philips Hue and LifX, making the Iota useful both as a single component or as the centerpiece of a smarthome security setup.

Two-way voice controls provide the ability to monitor connected devices and issue commands as well.
On-board Wi-Fi means live video from the camera can be accessed at any time through Abode’s site, their app or through Apple’s Home app, and in the event of an alarm the system automatically captures video and uploads it to a user’s Abode timeline regardless of the security plan selected. Video clips can also be set to record for other events, like the door being opened, and alerts can be set for those events as well to keep owners apprised of who’s coming and going at home.

Infrared LEDs provide night vision and a battery backup can provide more than 10 hours of of functionality if the power goes out — although if the internet is down the device can’t be accessed remotely unless users opt for the $10-a-month cellular backup plan. A $30-a-month plan is also available for users who want professional monitoring, but the company also offers plans for three or seven-day increments for quick vacations and trips.
