“Just remember, every cloud has a silver lining. Except for mushroom clouds. They have a lining of Iridium and Strontium-90.” This is just one of many witticisms that the new Carrot Weather for Mac ($10) will entertain you with as you try to figure out whether to bring an umbrella with you for the day.

Billed as an app “overflowing with personality,” Carrot’s weather forecasts are anything but dull, with dialogue, characters, and scenery that will change in surprising and unexpected ways.

The app provides detailed weather data from Forecast.io with 24-hour and seven-day forecasts and even rain/snow prediction that can give you to-the-minute predictions, at least in certain countries. Whether you’re just interested in what to wear out for the day or you’re a hardcore weather nerd, Carrot has you covered with as much or as little detail as you want to see, and you can even get a quick look at the current conditions and temperature right from the app’s menu bar icon.

A unique Time Machine feature also lets you see what the weather was like on any given day up to 70 years in the past, or what it will be like (supposedly) up to 10 years in the future, and there are apparently over 30 secret locations hidden away in the app waiting to be unlocked for an extra touch of whimsy. The Mac version also provides support for pushing weather notifications to the iOS app if you’re using that as well, and you can even sync your iPhone’s actual location back to your Mac via iCloud for when you’re travelling farther afield.
