G-Technology continues to produce great hard drives with Mac-inspired designs, always sold at premiums due to their superior materials and reliability. Now there’s an option if you’re looking for an external hard drive that won’t break the bank: the company’s new G-Drive USB ($160-$400).
Available in 2TB, 3TB, 4TB, and 6TB capacities, these new models provide a much more affordable alternative to the standard G-Drive by focusing solely on USB 3.0 and eliminating the more expensive and increasingly niche connectivity options such as Firewire 800, eSATA, and Thunderbolt.
Despite the reduced number of ports, you still get the same Hitachi high-quality desktop 7200RPM hard drive inside, which is now in a smaller and sleeker enclosure – around 1.5” shallower and 0.5” shorter, albeit the same width as its older big brother.
The USB 3.0 interface and high-performance hard drive provide up to a 226MB/s transfer rate in the 6TB version, versus a 165MB/s rate in the 2/3/4TB versions, and you’ll find a slim power supply and USB 3.0 cable inside the box, plus a three-year warranty.
