While we’ve personally never been big fans of iPhone folio cases in general, we do acknowledge that some users who like to carry their iPhone in a purse or shoulder bag may benefit from the tradeoff between full front screen protection and quick accessibility. If you fit into that category, Gear4’s updated Oxford Bookcase ($50) is worth a look.

Unlike many of the folio cases we’ve seen that emphasize style over protection, Gear4 has built Oxford out of patented, shockproof D3O material, so it not only provides a cover for your iPhone screen, but “military-grade” drop protection as well.
The updated design is available in the four standard iPhone colours, and adds a clasp to hold the case closed along with an integrated stand, two card slots inside the front cover, and full button protection on both sides. The iPhone 7 Plus easily fits into the case, although you’ll suffer from some of the usual dock compatibility problems you’d have with any case that includes a protective on the Lightning port end.

We should also note that although one of the cases we tested worked flawlessly, the fit of the power button coverage on the other one wasn’t quite right, resulting in it not always pressing properly without having to play with it, so if you’re considering this case for your iPhone, we’d recommend ensuring you buy it somewhere that you can easily exchange it if you run into this issue. Oxford Bookcase is otherwise a good case and is worth a serious look if you want a stylish folio case that will protect your iPhone in the process.
