Braven

Previously known as Spar before improving its lineup under the Braven name, this young Bluetooth speaker manufacturer came out swinging at the 2013 CES, debuting two major new speakers, and publicly showing a third that made a small-scale debut late last year. One is waterproof, another large and metallic, and the third is made from plastic.

Braven’s new BRV-1 ($170) is billed as an “epic adventure” speaker, featuring a metal and plastic enclosure that has been very seriously ruggedized and waterproofed. Now with an IPX5 waterproof rating and the ability to withstand two-meter drops, BRV-1 packs two small drivers and passive radiators into its neat-looking body.

The ports are covered with a screw-off rear cap, which looks quite cool, and a 12-hour battery is included.

The Braven 850 ($300) is four times larger than the company’s prior top-end 650, now armed with two full-range drivers and two passive radiators.
