Q: I own Apple’s Pro Speakers. Can I use these with my new iPod photo?

A: You’ve correctly noticed that Apple’s Pro Speakers only connect via the “Apple Pro Speaker Jack,” found only on iMacs and PowerMac G4’s.
Good news! You can use Griffin Technology’s iFire product to connect your iPod to the Pro Speakers. Here’s how:
- Plug an iPod into the iFire’s audio mini jack using a miniplug-to-miniplug cable.
- Use a 6-pin to 6-pin Firewire cable, plugged into an Apple Firewire iPod AC Adaptor, to power the iFire’s Firewire port.
- Plug the iFire into the Apple Pro Speakers. It will provide the power and audio necessary to drive them.
One way of looking at this is that the cost to buy the iFire, Firewire cable, and Firewire AC adaptor ($40+$15+$20) is probably not worth the return, and you may be interested in a more standard set of speakers for around the same price (perhaps JBL’s Creature IIs). Then, you could charge the iPod with the USB power adaptor and cable you already have, and enjoy the advantage of a subwoofer.
