Q: I’m new to the iPod universe this Christmas, and all this ‘generation’ talk is confusing.
How do I tell what ‘generation’ iPod I have, and therefore, what accessories are compatible with my iPod?

A: If you’re new to iPods this Christmas, you either received an iPod shuffle (currently second generation), iPod nano (also a second generation model), or a full-size iPod (currently a revision of the fifth generation iPod, commonly referred to as “Late 2006” or “5.5G”).
If you’re still not sure which iPod you have, or which iPod others are discussing, Apple has an excellently detailed document on their support site that explains the visible differences between the various iPod models, and the generations associated with each of them.
