Q: Help! My new iPhone 6 is driving me nuts! I plug my iPhone in near my bed, and for some reason Siri keeps waking up randomly and asking me what I want. It only seems to do this when I’m in bed, which makes me think she’s deliberately trying to make me crazy. Sometimes she even wakes me up in the middle of the night.
It’s really creepy. I’d take my iPhone to an Apple Store, but it’s like 20 miles to the nearest one — the iPhone was a present from my dad. I had an iPhone 5 before and it didn’t do this at all, even though I used Siri all the time, she kept her mouth shut except when I wanted to talk to her.
A: It seems most likely you’ve actually run into a new iOS 8 feature that allows you to wake up Siri with your voice, simply by saying “Hey Siri.” The problem with this, however, is that as much as some people wish for the Star Trek-like futuristic dream of simply being able to randomly call on your computer, voice recognition technology really isn’t that perfect, which means your iPhone can often misinterpret normal conversation — or even snoring — as being a request for you to ask something of Siri. The good news is that you can turn this off with a quick trip into your iOS Settings app, under General, Siri. Simply toggle off the Allow “Hey Siri” option.
