First Looks Special: Altec Lansing inMotion iM7

One of the newest accessory arrivals at iLounge is Altec Lansing’s inMotion iM7 speaker system ($249.00), the company’s semi-portable competitor to Bose’s SoundDock. The iM7 system features a pop-open windowed cradle that accommodates all Dock Connector equipped iPods, including the 3G, 4G, photo, and mini models, as well as an international power adapter with plugs ready for a world traveler. Its significant weight and largely metal grille design evoke a sense of significance, while its multiple, large internal speakers give it performance capabilities outstripping all of Altec’s prior iPod-specific offerings.

Specifically, a 4” side-firing subwoofer provides low-end bass, while two 3” drivers provide mid-bass and mids, and two 1” drivers handle the highs.

A rubberized handle on the unit’s rear enables fairly easy carrying, while video (!) output ports on the rear enable iM7 to be used as an accompanying audio piece for iPod photo slideshows – a first-of-kind feature. Auxiliary input from other audio devices (including iPods such as 1G/2G and shuffle models) is permitted, and the unit runs off of eight D-cell batteries when you’re on the go – a significant difference from the outllet-dependent SoundDock.

There’s also an infrared remote control with separate bass and treble adjustments, volume, and the standard track forward/backward/play/pause functionality, plus an on/off button.

We’ll have plenty more to say on the iM7 system in the days to come – and there are some other surprises in store, too. If you’re looking for more information and pictures for upcoming iPod accessories, be sure to check out our free downloadable 2005 Buyers’ Guide, available now!
