Q: Whenever I play my iPod shuffle in my car through a cassette adapter, I have to crank up the volume on my car stereo. Can I adjust my tracks to play louder? In iTunes, I see there is a Volume Adjustment setting – would that help without distorting the sound?

A: iTunes does allow you to adjust the volume on individual tracks. To do this, select a track, then select File > Get Info.
Click the Options tab, then move the Volume Adjustment slider.
The only way to find out whether this will distort your music is to try it out on a few tracks. We tried this with several songs, making copies of them so we could listen to the same songs at different volumes, and the iPod shuffle didn’t seem to add any distortion.
It is possible, however, that your car stereo might distort the music a bit, depending on how loud you play it.
