Features You Need in a Learning Management System (LMS)

Features You Need in a Learning Management System (LMS)

Learning management systems can be vital for streamlining processes and fostering learning within an organization. Find the best system for your company by evaluating its features.

There are many learning management systems (LMS) available today, and each one has a range of different features and niches. The goals and needs of your organization are different to others, and you need to assess which platform suits your company best.

What sets excellent LMS platforms apart from the crowd? How do you choose what’s best for you?

Features You Need in a Learning Management System (LMS)

1. It Should Be Easy to Navigate

One of the key reasons companies use LMS platforms is to make the learning experience easier. In order to do this, it is essential that the LMS interface is simple to navigate for both the instructor and the learner. From the creation stage and delivery of content to the learning process, a user-friendly interface makes the experience hassle-free.

2. Content Management Should be a Breeze

An LMS contains all the various courses and learning content for an organization. Depending on the company’s goals and the needs of the learners, you may need to use different types of content. The LMS should be designed in such a way that instructors are able to manage and create content for targeted learning. It should be able to support various forms of content including downloadable documents and videos. Being able to download material allows the user to learn even when offline.

3. Ongoing Assessments are Monitored

One of the main benefits of this form of training is that learning and engagement is tracked every step of the way. This enables instructors to see where learners may need more assistance and even create personalised learning processes for them, improving the learning experience considerably. LMS platforms should have assessment features built in for both groups as well as for individual learners. Quizzes or graded assignments are useful assessment techniques that can even reinforce learning.

4. It Must Be Easy to Access Across Devices

Besides being convenient, reports have found that employees today prefer to learn on their own terms. If learning material is accessible on other devices like their mobile phones, it makes the training process more flexible. The program should be able to translate from one device to another with ease and without any glitches.

5. It Provides Reporting and Analytics

Accurate and continuous reports on various features of the training programs give instructors insights into how effective it is. Instructors can only make edits and alterations to better serve the learners if they first understand the current performance. This means that these detailed reports and analytic features are an important part of any learning management platform.

6. Rewards and Certifications

Positive responses and feedback encourage learners to stick with the course and rewards their efforts. Including gamification features like points, badges and leader boards in the training process boosts the experience and enhances engagement. In a study, 80% of learners stated that their productivity would go up if gamification features were included. Certifications are also required by many companies so having a learning management system that provides this is important.

7. Incorporation of Your Brand Identity

You should be able to customise your LMS in a way that it reflects your brand language. Check if you can customise the colours, add your logos, create your own banners, and use the default company font. Using your branding for the learning portal can help connect new recruits to your brand. And for existing employees, it may enhance the experience if the portal feels familiar.

8. It Includes Social Elements

A well-designed learning management platform will provide features or a space to incorporate the social element in the learning process. Learners should be able to connect with peers, join in discussions, and share ideas and feedback. According to research, engagement rises with the inclusion of social features. Learning from discussions with peers does improve engagement and encourages learners to share knowledge.

9. Multilingual Platforms

To overcome language barriers in training, an LMS platform should accommodate multiple languages. Some platforms use a geolocation feature that recognises the appropriate language for that area and displays that version of the training program to the learner.

10. Automation of Administrative Tasks

In order to save time and effort, it’s useful for an LMS to take on basic repetitive admin tasks. This takes that load off the instructor or learning administrator. Group enrolments, user grouping, and deactivations are examples of the tasks that an LMS can perform.

Making a careful choice and evaluating the options available are more likely to make the LMS a useful, well-utilised tool for your organization.
