How has Pinterest Upped its Game by Making it Accessible to Everyone

Pinterest is a great social media platform if you wish to reach out to the audience who can be visually appealed by your pins to be interested in your products and services but what about the others who are challenged visually or any other way? How would you reach out to those audiences?

According to the UN’s Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, it has been clearly stated that modifications and adjustments need to be made in order to ensure that people with disability are able to enjoy on an equal basis without any discrimination.

How has Pinterest Upped its Game by Making it Accessible to Everyone

As per Section 508, a federal website needs to be accessible and safe for people suffering from disabilities. Though not compulsory for private websites but it is still good to practice it so that you can target a larger audience and make the site more user-friendly.

Pinterest has stepped up its game and has implemented a few changes to make it more accessible to the disables, let us understand the new features added on Pinterest to make it more user-friendly;

Improved Color Contrasts:

Pinterest has changed the color palette to make it more legible for people with low vision. The text is put up against background colors from which it is easier to read. Pinterest used to focus on making the entire experience visually beautiful, it has changed its color palette usage to focus more on legibility than beauty.

Customizable Typography:

The font sizes are important as many visually challenged users may only be able to read bigger fonts. Pinterest has made it possible to change the font size as per your preference hence making it simpler for many users to follow. Also, the Pinterest platform is designed with clear typographic hierarchy making the information meaningful at first glance.

Clear Focus Indicators:

People with motor disabilities may navigate using their keyboard instead of the mouse or the touch screen. The focussed element is highlighted clearly so that the user can navigate through Pinterest without any difficulty.

Use of SVGs:

Replacing Portable Network Graphics (PNGs) with Scalable Vector Graphics (SVGs) so that the users can access the zoom in feature provided without any loss in the pixel density can help people with low vision to check Pinterest effortlessly as they can easily see the zoomed components.

Not Relying on Colors:

Typography is used to create a flow of meaningful information and call for action rather than color representation. Relying on greyscale will help colorblind people access the platform easily.

Optimized with Screen Reader Support:

Making Pinterest usable with the screen reader by making the integration seamless has allowed blind people to access this platform. Navigating through the app along with signing in has been optimized with the screen reader for better accessibility.

Making Accessibility a Practice for Designers:

Pinterest has introduced a new UI library for its users to create designs from. The best part is that the components are clearly labeled and automated accessibility is in place so that the designs created are accessible to everyone.

With these improved accessibility features, Pinterest sure is focussing on bringing in as many users to its platform as possible especially disables who found it almost impossible to access this social media platform. This improved reach will help in turning your business conversions over.
